Recovering Attorneys' Program
After considerable experience treating attorneys,
HealthCare Connection of Tampa established the Recovering Attorneys' Program as a specific track for attorneys. The program is unique in that it is the only attorneys' program in the country which has a specific curriculum for attorneys and is administered and facilitated by certified addiction professionals who are also attorneys in recovery.
The program includes (1) an initial assessment with the Recovering Attorneys' Program's director to identify and address any concerns regarding management of the patient's law practice while in treatment, Bar grievances and/or disciplinary problems, and criminal/civil consequences arising from chemically dependent behavior; (2) two 12 step meetings
per week specifically for attorneys; (3) weekly "mirror image" counseling sessions with other HealthCare Connection alumni-attorneys; (4) weekly one-on-one sessions with the Recovering Attorneys' Program's director to address any of the patient's ongoing professional concerns, difficulties or grievances with the treatment process, and interactions with other patients/staff in the treatment community.
This model has proven successful in helping attorneys to remain in treatment long enough to allow the patient to complete their treatment
and allow recovery principles to take hold in the patient. Our attorney/patients are kept in frequent contact and interaction with recovering attorneys in the community who can empathize with their circumstances.
Our Program effectively eliminates two of the attorney/patient's most common and primary objections to treatment, (1) that they are not understood by the clinical staff, and (2) that the recovery process is
inapplicable to their needs.
